Another tale from Big4 highlights the disparity in how new and veteran employees are treated.
When Riya joined the firm, her performance manager pulled her aside and advised her, "You've just started here, and there are some people who disregard and break the rules. Don't follow their example. I'm telling you this to support your career and ensure you stay on the right path."
Riya considered that even her parents weren't as concerned about her career as her performance manager was. She decided she should heed his advice, and so she did.
Regrettably, she adhered to all the rules, joined promptly, submitted her work on time, and avoided taking unnecessary leaves, which led to her being given increasingly more tasks. She perceived this as a sign of trust and felt content, noticing that the long-time employee, Seema, was not assigned as much work.
Over time, she began to notice that despite the performance manager's negative comments about the old employee, no action was taken. Even though the performance manager claimed that the old employee's credibility was low, Seema continued to receive assignments and could take as much leave as she wished. In contrast, Riya faced difficulties even when requesting a single day off, as she was accused of taking undue advantage and excessive leave, while Seema had been on leave for a week. Yet, according to her performance manager, Riya's one-day absence would disrupt work. Additionally, she observed that the performance manager consistently sided with Seema, regardless of her poor performance, and would harass Riya over the smallest mistakes.
Riya realized that only parents truly care about you, and all other advice claiming to be for your benefit is insincere.
